Focusing on efficiency at the expense of safety can lead to catastrophe. Focusing on safety at the expense of efficiency can lead to business failure. Delivering both Safe and Efficient Operations is critical to your employees and your clients!
Complicated tools rarely leave the office and make it to the work site. The PDR work process gives your teams a simple, memorable tool to drive safe and efficient operations.
People often prefer to just jump into work and "get er done" without taking time plan. They confuse activity with accomplishment, and while they may start the work sooner, they pay for their lack of planning in the form of:
The PDR Works Process stands for Plan, Do, and Review.
Plan: Two things must be completed before work begins:
Do: The Doing phase focuses on maintaining safety and efficiency during the course of execution. Even the best of work plans is subject to task drift and deviation where unanticipated and unmanaged risks can lead to catastrophic outcomes. Real-Time Safety teaches your team to recognize emerging risk on the fly and take action to keep everyone safe.
The three focus areas during the Do Phase are Gather, Guard and Go!
Gather - is about getting the right people, equipment and materials to the worksite to ensure safety and efficiency.
Guard - focuses on Start Work Authority. *Stop work Authority relies on someone calling a time-out when things are getting out of control. It is an important idea, but often initiated too late. Start Work Authority is about shifting our mindset to ensure safety barriers are in place and functional before things get out of control!
Go - Once we have gathered and guarded, we can execute the work. However, even the best laid plans are subject to drift, deviation, hazard creep, and interruption so everyone needs to observe and be prepared to intervene in real-time.
Review: The after-action review fuels safety and efficiency by making sure we learn from our experience. The three simple phases are:
Compare - Did we work the plan and was that plan accurate and helpful.
Capture - What lessons did we learn about barriers missing, improved procedures, or unplanned deviations?
Correct - is about making sure that work procedures and risk assessments reflect those lessons learned so we can improve efficiency.
PDR training is an engaging process that gets people on their feet, using the tools, and even having some fun! This makes the tools memorable, and builds buy-in and confidence. No death by PowerPoint, No flavor or the day solutions!
